The Dunk Show at Dunk Camp 2024

It was Dunk Show time, and I almost didn’t think it would happen.

We got to the gym about an hour early to get set up for the big exhibition show at Dunk Camp 2024. The plan was simple. We would run warm-ups, then the pros would come out and put on the actual show. What I didn’t expect was how close the whole thing came to falling apart before it even started.

The Show Almost Didn’t Happen

Going into it, a lot of the pros were dealing with minor injuries. That had me pretty worried. For a while it looked like the show might just be a few guys instead of the full lineup we all came to see.

There were even rumors floating around that some of them weren’t going to be in it at all. When you are standing in a loud gym, hour early, watching the people you look up to nurse sore knees and ankles, your expectations start to drop fast.

So I tried not to get my hopes too high. I figured I would just enjoy whatever we got.

My Warm-Ups: A Year of Progress

Before the pros took over, the warm-ups were on us. This is the part I get to be a part of, and honestly it’s one of my favorite moments of the whole camp.

I didn’t expect much from myself this time. I had already jumped earlier in the day, so my legs weren’t exactly fresh. But once I got going, it turned out way better than I thought it would.

The thing that stuck with me was comparing it to the year before. Last year at my Dunk Camp 2023 recap, I didn’t even hit a Windmill in warm-ups. This year I hit a Windmill and a Dubble Up, and the Dubble Up got a pretty good crowd reaction.

That might not sound like a lot to someone watching from the stands. To me it was huge. A full year of training, and the difference showed up right there in front of a crowd. If you want to see what those names actually mean, I broke them down in my dunk terminology guide.

Watching the Pros Take Over

Then the pros came out, and any worry I had about the show falling flat went away.

Even with guys battling injuries, they found a way to put on a real show. There’s something about watching the best dunkers in the world feed off each other and a loud gym that makes everything go up a level. The power on some of these throwdowns was insane.

What made it special was how it built. It started solid, kept climbing, and then the final dunks were on another level. Those last ones were the kind that make the whole gym lose it. After being so worried it would be a short, quiet show, watching it end like that felt even better.

Sitting that close to professional dunking never gets old. It’s exactly why I keep coming back, and it’s a big reason I’m chasing the pro dunking level myself.

Why This Show Surprised Me

Looking back, this year’s Dunk Show surprised me more than any other.

It surprised me because the odds were against it. Injuries, rumors, guys who might not even step on the floor, and somehow it turned into one of the most fun shows I’ve been a part of. Some insane dunks got hit, especially at the end.

It also surprised me on a personal level. Going from no Windmill in warm-ups one year to a Windmill plus a Dubble Up with a crowd reaction the next is the kind of progress that keeps me motivated. The journey from where it all started at Dunk Camp 2022 to now has been wild to look back on.

What’s Next

That wraps up this year’s Dunk Camp content for me.

My Day 4 session is its own post, so make sure to check that out. And the bigger one coming next is my first ever Dunk Contest, which happened right after Dunk Camp. That one is a really good one, and I’m super excited to show it to you.

Thank you so much for watching. If you’re new, make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss the contest. I’ll see you in the next one. Peace out.
